This year is the 150 anniversary of the passing of GreyFriars Bobby. The Old fashioned Skye Terrier that became famous after he took up his 14 year vigil at the graveside of his Master John Gray who died at the age of 43 of tuberculosis. Bobby, lived under a gravestone in the surrounds of the Greyfriars Kirk in the middle of Old Edinburgh. He would not move from the spot although many people tried to rehome him, he would escape and make his way back to the grave stone of his master. The only time he would break his vigil would be to eat. At 1oclock the Castle sounded a gun. Bobby used this as his sign to go and eat. He was fed by a local Restuarant called Traill's dining room. An establishment frequented by John and Bobby when he was alive and working as the cities night watchman. The restuarant continued to feed Bobbi daily. The word got out that this little dog had a strict ritual at 1 o clock and people from miles around came to watch this event. Bobbi was finally adopted by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh and became owned by the city. He died in January 1872 at the age of 16. Bobby has a head stone in the Kirk yard that reads "Greyfriars Bobby - died 14th January 1872 - aged 16 years - Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all".
